Fuel Prices in Portugal 2026: Where to Fill Up Cheap — A Traveller's Guide
Petrol in Portugal costs about €1.882/L and diesel €1.779/L — above the EU average and well above neighbouring Spain. Here's where it's cheapest, what the fuel grades are called, and the electronic-toll trap on Portuguese motorways.
How much does fuel cost in Portugal right now?
As of 2026-06-22, petrol (gasolina 95) in Portugal costs around €1.882 per litre and diesel (gasóleo) about €1.779 per litre. That's above the EU average of €1.733/L for petrol and €1.741/L for diesel.
The big contrast is with Spain, Portugal's only land neighbour: petrol there costs around €1.460/L — roughly 40 cents per litre less. If your route runs near the border (the Algarve and Alentejo are close to Spain), filling up on the Spanish side can save €20 on a single tank. Within Portugal, the station type makes the biggest difference.
Where is fuel cheapest in Portugal?
Three things to look for:
- 'Low cost' stations — Portugal has a growing network of cheaper independents (Prio is the best-known) that undercut the big brands (Galp, BP, Repsol, Cepsa) by several cents per litre.
- Supermarket fuel — hypermarkets like Continente, Pingo Doce and Intermarché run competitive pumps.
- Avoid the autoestrada. Motorway stations are the most expensive; fill up in a town instead.

Fuel grades and what they're called
The Portuguese names at the pump:
- Gasolina 95 — standard unleaded ('sem chumbo'). 'Gasolina 95 aditivada' is the additised premium version; Gasolina 98 is the high-octane grade.
- Gasóleo — diesel. 'Gasóleo aditivado' is premium diesel.
- Gasóleo colorido / agrícola — dyed agricultural diesel; never for a normal car.
- GPL Auto — LPG/autogas.
Most hire cars take gasolina 95 or gasóleo. Read the label rather than relying on nozzle colour.
The toll trap on Portuguese motorways
This one catches many visitors and has nothing to do with the pump itself. Several Portuguese motorways are electronic-toll-only (the ex-SCUT roads) — there are no toll booths, and cameras read your number plate. With a foreign car and no transponder, you can rack up unpaid tolls without realising.
If you're driving a lot, get a toll device (Via Verde Visitors / an electronic toll tag) at the border or airport, or check the operator's app to pay. Hire cars often come with a transponder — confirm with the rental company. As for fuel payment itself: Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost everywhere (Portugal's domestic 'Multibanco' network is card-friendly), but keep a little cash for small rural stations.
Check live prices before you fill up
Prices vary between low-cost, branded and motorway stations only a few kilometres apart. Before you stop, check our live Portugal fuel-station map — it shows up-to-date prices for around 3,000 stations across the country, so you can find the cheapest near your route.

Fun facts: Portugal's fuel quirks
- Because Spain is so much cheaper, fuel tourism runs the other way here: Portuguese drivers near the border routinely cross into Spain to fill up.
- Portugal pioneered electronic tolling: the Via Verde system, launched in 1991, was one of the world's first nationwide electronic toll networks.
- Low-cost chains like Prio have reshaped the market over the past decade, pushing the big brands to offer discount cards.
- The Algarve, Portugal's holiday hotspot, is right next to Spain's cheaper Huelva province — handy to know on a road trip.
