About EU EnergyPrices
An independent open-data project that makes European energy prices comparable — in 24 languages.
Who runs this site
EU EnergyPrices is built and run by Matthias Schulz from Teterow, Germany, as an independent one-person project. It is not affiliated with any utility, fuel company, price-comparison business or government body, carries no sponsored rankings and sells no leads — the only revenue is display advertising.
The site started from a simple frustration: European energy price data exists, but it is scattered across statistical office spreadsheets, weekly PDF bulletins and national portals in a dozen formats. This site pulls those official sources into one place, keeps them updated automatically and presents every number the same way for every country.
What we track
- Household electricity prices for 40 European countries, half-yearly from Eurostat — latest period H2 2025, history back to 2007.
- Household natural gas prices for 33 countries, also half-yearly from Eurostat.
- Petrol and diesel pump prices for 30 countries, weekly from the EU Oil Bulletin plus Norway, the UK and Switzerland from their national statistics.
- Live station prices from about 67,000 fuel stations in Germany, Spain, France, Austria, Italy and Portugal, refreshed between every minute and once a day depending on the national source.
- Wholesale day-ahead electricity prices for 31 bidding zones, updated hourly, with the generation mix per zone.
- All of it in 24 EU languages, with the same numbers on every language version.
Sources
Nothing here is estimated or modelled: every figure is taken from an official publication and shown with its date.
- Eurostat — nrg_pc_204 / nrg_pc_202 — household electricity and gas prices, consumption bands DC and D2, all taxes and levies included
- European Commission — Weekly Oil Bulletin — weekly consumer prices for Euro-Super 95 and diesel as reported by the member states each Monday
- SSB · DESNZ · BFS — national statistics for Norway (monthly), the United Kingdom (weekly / annual) and Switzerland (monthly), converted to euros
- ENTSO-E Transparency Platform · Elexon BMRS — day-ahead auction prices and actual generation per bidding zone

- European Central Bank — euro reference exchange rates used for every currency conversion
How we calculate
- “EU average” is the unweighted mean of EU member states only. Eurostat also reports EFTA and candidate countries; they appear in tables and on maps, marked “non-EU”, but never inside the EU average.
- Rankings and “cheapest / most expensive” compare EU members, EFTA countries and the UK. Candidate and neighbouring countries keep their own pages but do not compete in the rankings.
- Fuel prices are pump prices including all duties and VAT. Where a source publishes in national currency, we convert at the ECB reference rate for the same period.
- Gas prices per m³ are a convenience conversion at 10.55 kWh per cubic metre; your supplier’s calorific factor may differ slightly.
- Changes (“vs. previous period”) compare the same country with its own previous value in the same source — never across sources.
How often things update
- Eurostat household prices: twice a year, typically with a lag of about six months.
- Fuel bulletin prices: every Friday, once the Commission publishes the Monday prices.
- Live station prices: Germany in near real time, Spain / France / Portugal every 30 minutes, Austria hourly, Italy daily.
- Wholesale prices: hourly from ENTSO-E and Elexon.
Limitations
Official statistics are slow. Eurostat’s household prices describe a half-year that ended months ago, so they are a reliable comparison baseline, not today’s tariff. Fuel and wholesale data are current; station prices are whatever the operators report and can be briefly stale or wrong.
Averages are unweighted — a small country counts as much as a large one. All data is provided without warranty; for contracts, invoices or investment decisions, consult the original source.
