The surprise at the pump: petrol for €1.89 — cheaper than Germany or France
Start with the number that surprises almost everyone from the continent: in the week of 2026-08-24, a litre of petrol averaged €1.89 in the United Kingdom — against €2.25 in Germany and €2.06 in France. Filling a 50-litre tank costs roughly €18 less than in Germany; per litre the UK is about 16% cheaper.
The main reason is political, not geological. The UK's fuel duty — the fixed excise tax per litre — has not been raised since 2011, and in 2022 it was even cut by 5 pence to 52.95p/L as a cost-of-living measure, a cut that has been extended ever since. While Germany and France adjusted energy taxes and added CO₂ levies, the British duty simply sat still while inflation shrank it in real terms. It may be the only thing in British politics that has stayed reliably frozen for fifteen years.
One caveat before the celebration starts: cheaper than Germany is not the same as cheap. The EU-27 average is €1.82/L — slightly below the UK. Britain beats its big neighbours, not the whole continent.
Household electricity: cheap next to Germany, expensive next to everyone else
For 2025, British households paid about 36.3 ct/kWh for electricity. Next to Germany's 43.8 ct that looks comfortable — next to the EU average of 28.8 ct it does not. France, with its nuclear fleet, charges 30.4 ct. The UK sits firmly in Europe's expensive upper third: less punishing than Germany, but far from a bargain.
What makes the UK system unusual is *how* the price is set. Since 2019, the regulator Ofgem has imposed a price cap on default tariffs, recalculated every quarter from actual wholesale, network and policy costs. It caps the unit rate and standing charge — not the total bill — and moves with the market in both directions: in July 2026 it rose by 13%, yet across our annual data UK household electricity actually changed by -2.4% year over year. Tens of millions of households effectively have their tariff set by a regulator's spreadsheet four times a year — a mechanism Germany, where prices emerge from thousands of individual contracts, simply has no equivalent for.

Gas: Britain's quiet bargain
If British electricity is dear, British gas is the opposite. Households paid about 8.5 ct/kWh in 2025 — below the EU average of 9.8 ct and well under Germany's 11.3 ct.
Three structural reasons: first, the UK taxes household energy at a reduced VAT rate of just 5%, where Germany applies 19% plus a CO₂ price. Second, Britain is exceptionally well connected to supply: its own (declining) North Sea fields, pipelines from Norway, and some of Europe's largest LNG import terminals. Third, scale — roughly 85% of British homes are connected to the gas grid and heat with it, one of the highest shares in Europe, and that huge, liquid market keeps distribution costs per unit low.
Cheap gas is why the British energy debate sounds different from the German one: the UK's problem child is the electricity bill, not the heating bill. The national tea kettle, for the record, runs on the expensive fuel.
The wholesale paradox: pricier at the exchange, milder at home
Now the part that looks like a contradiction. On the wholesale market — where suppliers buy power by the hour — Great Britain is *more* expensive than Germany: over the last 30 days, GB day-ahead prices averaged about €151/MWh against €126/MWh in the German-Luxembourg zone, a premium of roughly 20%. Yet at the household socket, the UK is the cheaper of the two. Both halves of the paradox have clean explanations.
Wholesale first: gas-fired plants set the British price in most hours, so GB electricity imports the world gas market's mood almost one-to-one. And since Brexit, GB has been outside the EU's market coupling: interconnector capacity to France, Belgium and the Netherlands is auctioned separately (»explicit« auctions) instead of being optimised jointly with the energy trade — workable, but measurably less efficient, and the planned »loose volume coupling« replacement is still on the drawing board.
Retail second: what households pay is wholesale *plus* networks, levies and tax — and that stack is politics. Germany piles surcharges and 19% VAT onto the bill; the UK adds its policy costs more gently and taxes the result at 5%. A dearer market, taxed lightly, can beat a cheaper market taxed hard.
Diesel: the island's expensive habit
One pump number goes the other way. British diesel cost €2.14/L in the week of 2026-08-24 — 25 cents above petrol. In Germany the gap was just 4 cents (2.29 vs 2.25), and against the EU diesel average of €1.98 the UK looks properly expensive.
Again the tax code explains most of it. The UK charges identical duty on petrol and diesel — 52.95p on both — so the raw market difference shows up undamped at the pump: diesel is the pricier product to make and to import, and Britain, short on refining capacity for middle distillates, imports a lot of it. Germany, by contrast, taxes diesel about 18 cents less per litre than petrol, an old industrial-policy subsidy that hides diesel's true cost. Same physics, different politics: in Germany the state flatters diesel, in Britain it lets you see the invoice.
